Contemporary art biennale in Borgerhout, Antwerp

19 September - 5 October 2014, in different venues across the city

The BORG Biennale 2014 was a multidisciplinary arts festival held in Borgerhout, Antwerp. It showcased contemporary group exhibitions in unconventional venues, as well as satellite locations, art interventions in public spaces, open studios and galleries. Each of the main exhibition venues, including a deconsecrated church, a disused 1960s office block, and a former post office, was assigned to a curatorial duo. The participating artists were selected through an open call by a professional jury, added to those proposed by the curators.

BORG is an initiative of Thierry Vandenbussche, Bart Vanderbiesen, Bart Verschueren, Pieter Vermeulen, and Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx, with the support of District Borgerhout

The exhibition took place in the Vooruitzicht building, an abandoned late 1960’s office space. Each work in the exhibition relates to or is inspired by the many different materials and surfaces still in place, bringing out a strangely domestic atmosphere.

An exhibition about how things end and others begin, about the moment between these two moments when everything changes. An exhibition about distancing, about a changing perspective on the past, about new opportunities for the future. It is about the indeterminate in-between moment when everything becomes different, and about time making all this possible. Midway through the journey, neither here nor there is about this period of transformation, a journey between a literal or figurative here and there.
